The World Health Organization's digital files, the Wuhan Virology Institute, the Gates Foundation, and other institutes working on the novel coronavirus pandemic have been hacked. Thousands of their emails, passwords, and documents are leaking online.
According to the SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks online terror organizations, hackers distributed around 25,000 email addresses and their passwords from the organizations that are at the forefront of the global pandemic battle.
There were also several screenshots of the documents, emails, and passwords shared on Twitter. On Sunday and Monday, the data was leaked.
With 9,938 emails and passwords posted online, the Maryland-based SITE said the National Institute Of Health(NIH) was the biggest target of hacking. There were also leaks of up to 6,857 emails and passwords from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 5,120 from the World Bank, and 2,732 from WHO. The hackers also attacked the Gates Foundation, the Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates's private philanthropic organization, and the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan City, China from where the novel coronavirus pandemic originated. The SITE was however unable to verify that the email addresses and passwords were authentic.
Robert Potter, an Australian cybersecurity expert, believed he was able to verify that the email addresses and passwords for the WHO were legitimate. Rita Katz, the Executive Director of SITE, said, "Neo-Nazis and white supremacists have capitalized on the lists and have actively distributed them through their platforms."
